The theory that illness and disease was caused by “miasma”, a noxious form of bad air caused by rotting organic matter was accepted until the late 19th century. The use of microscopes debunked this theory. In 1832 and 1854, Hamilton experienced a cholera epidemic, which decimated the population. Ceramic purifiers like this one were common for the wealthy. This filter removes impurities and contaminants through ceramic disks to provide clear water. It didn’t remove all bacteria and microorganisms.
