More model informationWest Rigg, Westgate, Weardale
The model shows the Opencut Quarry at West Rigg. The site is unique in that later C19th Ironstone quarrying exposed the Slitt Vein, a vein that was mined for lead.
The Slitt Vein is the section standing in the middle. It is one of the longest veins in this part of the Pennines, stretching for nearly 13 miles from Wearhead down the dale to Frosterley.
Photographed Autumn 2024.
