More model informationSaddle makers created the classic Western-style saddles for use in the mid to late 1800s. They are based upon earlier Mexican saddles.
Western saddletrees made of four heavy pieces-the front fork or pommel, two side bars and the rear cantle - with a horn used in roping cattle and other livestock.
The very early Wetern saddletree front forks were carved from “Y” shaped forked branches or tree roots. The wooden horn was an integral part of the fork. Later horns were made of metal and attached to teh front fork with screws or bolts.
