Photographic technology was introduced to Japan from the Netherlands in 1848. The collodion process (wet plate photography), which was introduced around 1857, led to the full-fledged spread of photography. Several professional photographers emerged by the end of the Edo period and opened their studios in Edo, Yokohama, and Nagasaki. This camera is said to have been used by Yokoyama Shōzaburō, who photographed the former Edo Castle and other sites.
