In mythology and poetry, the term “Windsbraut” stands for whirling winds, but women with a boisterous and wild nature are also sometimes referred to in this way. The bronze Windsbraut, created by the sculptor Hans Martin Ruwoldt and located on the banks of the Binnenalster, shows a towering, abstract body whose form is not clearly visible to the eye.
Hans Martin Ruwoldt was born in Hamburg on February 15, 1891. In 1906-09 he served an apprenticeship as a sculptor in Rostock. 1911-14 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Hamburg in the sculpture class of Richard Luksch. From 1922 he worked in his own studio in Hamburg and carried out numerous commissions for Hamburg buildings and facilities. In 1928 he joined the Hamburg Secession.
