The spinnning action of a winnower separates the grain from the chaff, enabling the cleaned grain to be ground into flour. There is no histiric evidence of how the grain was cleaned at Upminster. The model shows a winnower that was obtained for display, though its history is unknown. It can be seen at Thames Chase, as part of their agricultural collection.
