More model information

A complete copper alloy hinged thumb-grip from the lid of a tankard, of Post Medieval dating (1550-1700).

The object consists of a thick, wedge-shaped plate, flat on both faces and rectangular in section. At one end, the edges curve towards a rounded tip, the opposite end projects a small attachment loop with an internal perforation. This loop would have secured the thumb rest to the rest of the handle. Below the centre of the plate is a rectangular wedge from which projects two rounded knobs, one on each side, positioned obliquely upwards and outwards. This element acted as the thumb-rest and lever for opening and closing the lid.
