Wooden spade from The Moors at Arne, one of the oldest and most complete prehistoric tools ever found in Britain
Archaeological excavations taking place as part of the construction of The Moors at Arne project have led to the discovery of an extremely rare and near complete prehistoric wooden spade. Preliminary scientific dating confirms it is around 3500 years old, making it Bronze Age and one of the earliest wooden tools to be discovered in Britain. The spade was discovered during archaeological excavations by Wessex Archaeology for The Moors at Arne project. Kier is the contractor delivering this project on behalf of the Environment Agency and its project partners, RSPB and Natural England.
