In the 1920s, Julius Rosenwald, chairman of Sears and Roebuck, Co., started a program to support the development of African-American schools in the southern United States. The program required the local community to raise half the funds necessary to build the school, at which time Mr. Rosenwald would donate the remaining amount. Woodville was one of six Rosenwald schools built in Gloucester, Virginia, and is the only one still standing in the county. The TC Walker and Woodville/Rosenwald School Foundation is currently working to preserve the building and its history. Former Fairfield Foundation intern and current UNC PhD student Colleen Betti is also conducting archaeological excavations at the site as part of her dissertation research.
