This whale was discovered by the Coast Guard near Sitka on Sunday March 14th at Shoal’s Point on Kruzof Island.
A necropsy is a type of autopsy typically led by a veterinarian to determine cause of death and also collect samples that can teach us more about the biology of the dead animal. This necropsy occured on Thursday March 18th led by Dr. Lauren Wild, a research biologist, professor and the stranding coordinator in Sitka and worked in coordination and under authorization of NOAA Fisheries.
