Wroxeter Farm, Shropshire (UK). Interior of former cattle barn.
Wroxeter Farm was built in the nineteenth century near the centre of the former Roman City. It partly overlies several important Roman buildings, and some of the farm’s walls incorporate fragments of Roman stonework.
This barn was created in c.1870 by roofing over an open courtyard. The six oak pillars incorporate slots for moveable horizontal bars which were used to divide areas within the barn to make it easier to control and feed the cattle. The barn was cleaned out once a year.
Our aerial photography, survey and photogrammetry at Wroxeter Roman City is part of a research project with the University of Birmingham, Vianova Archaeology and Heritage Services, Albion Archaeology and English Heritage. The whole of Wroxeter Roman City is a Scheduled Monument.
