More model informationThis is a left rib from an unidentified young adult female, excavated from Upton-on-Severn, Worcestershire, as part of a rescue excavation during construction work on part of a disused graveyard dating to between 1836 and 1866.
The rib exhibits porotic lesions that arise following chronic inflammation of the pleura, which are protective layers that surround the lungs. Other inflammatory lesions were found throughout the skeleton including lesions within the cranium, a scalloped lesion to the anterior of the 2nd lumbar vertebra and symmetrical lesions in the arms and legs. These changes are may represent hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, which is linked to lung, liver and gastrointestinal disorders.
