During the riots which left 53 Italians and hundreds of Somalis dead, Xawo Taako rose up and led the charge and was subsequently martyred. She is recognized as the mother of modern day Somalia. She gave her life valiantly fighting for the prospect of a free and independent nation for her people.
The 11th of January will always be remembered as the day that Xaawo Taako became a martyr for the Somali cause. She will never be forgotten.
This is part of an ongoing project looking at some of the most important buildings in Mogadishu. These buildings stood still during the war and have now turned into some of the buildings have now turned into well-known ruins within the city.
