More model informationThis is the east face of the Xocnaceh Acropolis, excavated by Tomas Gallareta Negron and Rossana May Ciau. This lies along the base of the Puuc escarpment and is similar in form to several others within the Puuc, such as Xocnaceh and Yaxhom. These large acropolises date to the latter Middle Formative and are among the largest monumental structures in northern Yucatan. The acropolis grew in two major stages. The earlier stage can be seen along the left edge of the image, where the earlier facade is exposed behind the Stage 2 facade. During Stage 2, tiers were added to the existing outset staircase, as can be seen where they were no longer present when excavated.
