Yasen class, (Russian: Ясень, lit. ‘ash tree’, NATO Severodvinsk), are a series of nuclear-powered cruise missile attack submarines. Design work commenced in earnest in the 1980s with the first submarine built in the 1990s–early 2010s with commissioning in 2013. Based on the Akula class and Alfa class designs, the Yasen class is projected to replace the Russian Navy’s current Soviet-era nuclear attack submarines. The Yasen represents the most advanced russian submarine design, a flexible, ultra quiet multi-mission submarine the yasen is armed with both torpedos and missiles and can be used to strike targets from long distances, The nuclear powered submarine is a match for any western design; is faster and can dive deeper then nearly all other submarines. The Yasen can deploy for up to two years, and can carry nuclear armed cruise missiles. Upgraded to carry hypersonic missiles the yasen can strike targets thousands of miles away with little to know warning.
