The medieval metropolitan seat is the prolongation of the ancient religious practices developed in the sacred precinct of the cult of Emperor Augustus, a fundamental part of the urban complex of the Concilium Prouinciae Hispaniae Citerioris, the construction of which was completed during the Flavian dynasty. Later, the Christianisation of the Roman Empire and the socio-economic crisis led to the transformation of this great complex, which consisted of a two-hectare sacred square with two temples.
