The Everglades 3D™ project uses digital and spatial documentation methods to create 3D and cartographic models of sites and features in Everglades National Park, Florida. Many of these historical sites are made up of stone structures and ruins that sit atop prehistoric shell middens and are at risk of being damaged by water erosion from natural and human impacts. These delicate resources are also vulnerable to vandalism, wave action, and storm surge from hurricanes and other weather events. By using digital and spatial mapping methods, we can assess these prehistoric and historical sites using online tools and GIS analyses. We are mapping, monitoring, and analyzing these areas using remote sensing aerial and terrestrial LiDAR methods, as well as GPS ground verification and using close-range terrestrial and laser scanning approaches. The project is led by Dr. Lori Collins and Dr. Travis Doering.
