In 1907, Salvatore and Vittoria Giunta came to the US via Ellis Island, leaving their home in Santo Stefano Quisquina, Sicily. Many Sicilian families settled on the east side of Ybor City in Tampa, Florida, with many working in cigar factories and support industries. The Giuntas had various jobs, working as laborers on a local celery farm and in other capacities that allowed them to save enough money to purchase land. The farm, located at the corner of 11th Avenue and 24th Street, helped them to feed their family and make extra money from selling produce and herbs grown from heirloom seeds from Sicily. The vernacular bungalow-style home was built in 1924, and the Giuntas raised chickens and had a large garden and orchard that allowed them to live self-sufficiently. Today, the homestead remains much as it did in the past, with sisters Vicki and Tessie Giunta still operating and maintaining the garden and property (see the Giunta Homestead historic marker hmdb.org/m.asp).
