Best of Sketchfab: 3D Paintings

Back to overview

Sketchfab community members produce so much incredible content that sometimes it can be overwhelming to identify new people to follow or focus on just one thing as you scan your newsfeed. In our “Best of Sketchfab” series, we will highlight some of our favorite community members, collections, and models. This week Bart, the Head of Community at Sketchfab, shares his favorite 3D paintings.

For a few years now, I’ve been keeping a collection of 3D versions of famous paintings. I love how Sketchfab artists have added a degree of freedom to exploring these works—all based on personal interpretation, of course.

I’d love to share some of my personal favorites and being Dutch, I’ll focus on the Dutch Masters 🙂

Bedroom in Arles by Van Gogh

Van gogh Room by ruslans3d

This version of van Gogh’s ‘Bedroom in Arles’ is the quintessential example of a 3D painting on Sketchfab. I think ruslans3d was one of the first artists to explore this genre on Sketchfab. If you have the option to view this in VR—even on a simple cardboard viewer—you should really try it and be transported into this magical place. You’ll find yourself wondering what’s under the bed, or trying to look out the window. Read more about the creation of this model in our Art Spotlight with ruslans3d.

Mondriaan revisited by Rein Bijlsma

I live in the city where Piet Mondriaan was born—our entire town is filled with his artwork. His birthplace is turned into a museum and gives a really good understanding of his development as an artist and the influences on his work. What draws me to this work by Rein Bijlsma is not that it’s ‘just’ in 3D, but that it also communicates one of Mondriaan’s inspirations: the city.

Hand with Reflecting Sphere by M.C. Escher

Since I was a kid I have loved M.C. Escher’s work. At first, it was the ‘impossible’ worlds that drew my attention, but later I was more and more intrigued by his highly realistic and more mathematically inspired works, like his Metamorphosis series.

Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer

Girl with a Pearl Earring 3D by hinxlinx

You’ll find several versions of Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ on Sketchfab, but I felt this one is the closest to the original. I still remember how subtle breathing and blinking of her eyes jolted me when I first saw it. We see this painting a lot in the Netherlands, but seeing her ‘alive’ was magical.

Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh

Starry Night Diorama Tilt Brush by george peaslee

Take a walk in van Gogh’s Starry Night and look around in the nighttime village—and take a long look at the amazing sky from another perspective. Again, this is a fantastic scene to explore in VR.
