Sketchfab Hand Painting Challenge: Doors

Hi and welcome to this month’s hand painting challenge! We want to explore the liminal spaces of doors, those ordinary, mundane passageways we all go through every day. Do you envision yourself going to another room? Country? Realm? What would that space look like? Feel like? Express the story of this door or pathway via a small diorama that focuses on the hand-painted texture aspect of it.

TL;DR: create a hand painted doorway and tag it #HandPaintedDoor

Art Credit:


  • You can use any modeling and painting application that you want for this.
  • Once you’ve created your scene, upload it to Sketchfab and tag it with #HandPaintedDoor.
  • Share what you’re planning to paint on the challenge topic on the forum and post some ‘Work in Progress’ pictures or embed if you like.
  • Submit new work only.
  • Submission deadline is Tuesday, June 13 (23:59 New York time – EST).

  • Texture quality
  • Presentation
  • Optimization (no 2 million polygons)
  • Design

Terms and Conditions

  • No purchase necessary.
  • By entering this competition, entrants will be deemed to have accepted and agreed to the conditions.
  • This is a contest for individuals, no teams.
  • No alternative prizes available. The prize draw is not open to Sketchfab employees or their families.
  • No ripping of models from anywhere on the Internet, all entries must be original works of art.
  • Using work that is not your own will immediately disqualify you.
  • The judges’ decision are final – in case of dispute, no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Winning entries will be documented and may be used for promotional purposes.
  • Contestants models must be uploaded to Sketchfab and tagged #HandPaintedDoor to be considered.
  • Winners retain all Intellectual Property as per Sketchfab standard Terms and Conditions.
  • Winners and winning entries may be required to take part in any publicity resulting from this competition.
  • Submission deadline is Tuesday, June 13 (23:59 New York time – EST).
  • The winners will be contacted by Friday, June 16th.

      It’s okay to be inspired by concept art, just be sure to credit the original artist.

    Does the submission need to have a hand painted feel to it? Or is painting through masks and things like that to get hard lines and perfect shapes acceptable?

    I can’t find any decent free program to paint in any detail and it stay with the model. I have used Meshlab and the paint remains when exporting as an object. But even in Sculptris, I can’t do that. What program can I use? I tried blender and it’s way complex the way it works, I might go to college for 8 years and learn that. But any help is appreciate. I am just a retired electric mechanic doing this for fun. Thanks

      I would recommend Blender if you can’t afford something like Maya. It has an incredibly steep learning curve, but it won’t take you 8 years to be able to use it. I’d say more like 20 hours of tutorial videos should get you to a point where you can do the basics. Learning how to use all of it’s functionality might take years, however.

      Blender does have the ability to export objects in file types that include all the textures, such as FBX, and also can upload things directly to Sketchfab with a plugin.

      If you already have your model and would be happy to do the texturing again, Substance Painter is amazing. You can get a student license for free, or a free 30 day trial. I haven’t used it much, but from what little use I have had, it’s absolutely phenomenal and makes painting textures a piece of cake. It also has an option of uploading directly to Sketchfab. It’s pretty easy to learn compared to something like Blender, and works quite similarly to Photoshop

        I decided to go with blender. I am not afraid to learn, and I see how powerful it is.
        Free is very attractive too, with ongoing development.

    Hello, thanks for the awesome Theme 🙂 but I am a bit confused what do you mean with “hand painted”?

      Yeah. I asked that too! Twice. In two different places.

      I think I’m just going to submit two versions of the same entry just to make sure I haven’t broken any rules that disqualify me. One where I paint entirely by hand using no masks or anything like that, and another where I do use some masks and some procedurals.

      I mean alphas, not masks… I think. I’m new to texturing models so my terminology is probably off.

      Anything that looks painted. It doesn’t need to be painted by hand, just look like it.

        But I understand what you mean, not reflective surface but image stays fixed on model. Cheers! Ry
