Catalonia is an area, rich with medieval porticos and cultural heritage. Using that setup, I taught myself the basics of digital imaging. Since 1990 I have been working professionally in graphic design, interactive project development, 3D modeling, and animation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1996 I was involved along with various European artists in a pioneering project led by Roy Ascott to explore collaborative artistic creation in new media using the networks: <\/span><b><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalartarchive.at\/database\/general\/work\/art-idcyb-id.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Art-Id \/ Id-CYB<\/a>.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then for the last ten years, I have focused on producing television documentaries about art and documenting the cultural heritage of Catalonia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Project<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been interested in Virtual Polychromy for a long while and during my studies of the subject. In my studies, I learned that most of classic sculpture\/architecture (Greek and Roman) and stone works from the European Gothic and Medieval periods, were not displayed as naked stone but were actually painted. \u00a0Some authors such as the architect Charles Garnier at the end of the 19th century did color representations of Greek temples discovered in archaeological excavations.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_142059975856\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142059975856\" class=\"wp-image-142059975856 size-large lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blog.sketchfab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image05-2-1030x736.jpg\" alt=\"image05\" width=\"690\" height=\"493\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-142059975856\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-142059975856 size-large lazyload\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.sketchfab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image05-2-1030x736.jpg\" alt=\"image05\" width=\"690\" height=\"493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/blogs\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image05-2-1030x736.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/blogs\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image05-2-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/blogs\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image05-2-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/blogs\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image05-2-699x500.jpg 699w, https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/blogs\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image05-2.jpg 1035w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/noscript> Charles Garnier (1884), representing the temple of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikiwand.com\/en\/Aphaea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Aphaia<\/a> (c. 500BC) on the Greek island of A\u00edgina<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work that has impacted me the most is the incredible project\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikiwand.com\/en\/Gods_in_Color\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b><i>Gods in Color<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by the German archaeologist <\/span><b>Vinzenz Brinkmann <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and his team.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_142059975853\" style=\"width: 665px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142059975853\" class=\"wp-image-142059975853 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blog.sketchfab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image02-2.jpg\" alt=\"image02\" width=\"655\" height=\"279\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-142059975853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-142059975853 size-full lazyload\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.sketchfab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image02-2.jpg\" alt=\"image02\" width=\"655\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/blogs\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image02-2.jpg 655w, https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/blogs\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image02-2-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/noscript> Vinzenz Brinkmann: The Alexander sarcophagus Project (fragment)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Following a rigorous scientific approach and leveraging modern technology to identify the remains of color in the classical sculpture, Vinzenz and his team created replicas of classic sculpture in plaster and painted them with real colors, displaying them as they would look 2500 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My conclusions from studying his work and many others are this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to recover the aesthetics of polychrome sculpture and architecture of classical and medieval Art History that we have long thought to be naked stone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We currently have the means to represent these images digitally, creating three-dimensional models using accurate photogrammetry programs and &#8216;painting&#8217; using digital techniques.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tools are already very accessible and a have a huge dissemination potential.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts should study the archaeological remains in detail to give a scientific foundation to these representations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>My Project<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For six months I have been studying medieval polychromed stoneworks. An in-depth PhD thesis on the subject by Jorge Rivas (from Complutense University, Madrid) helped me a lot, as well as general treaties like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colour and Culture<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by John Gage (1993). <\/span><\/p>\n<p>To test my ideas, I finally decided to use one of the many Romanesque sculpture works near where I live. A big challenge was to find any references of aesthetic painting of sculptures in the 13th century from that geographical area. Secondly, I had to find a software suitable for &#8216;digital painting&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I contacted several archaeologists and historians to ask for help in the project, specially to get scientific guidance, but unfortunately I found no collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person who actually helped me was the artist <a href=\"http:\/\/pintura-mural.org\/en\/c\/pintura-mural-al-fresco-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Josep Minguell<\/a>, a professional mural painter specializing in the traditional technique of fresco.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Minguell gave me very practical advice, specifically regarding paint pigments palettes used in Romanesque painting. It was basically a combination of five colors: black, white, ocher, red and a sort of greenish blue (Aerinite), a mineral extracted from the nearby mountains (the Pyrenees).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had some discrepancies with regard to the practical use of gold leaf on the outside, but recent discoveries in other nearby doorways in the same period (such as in the Portico in <a href=\"http:\/\/gigapan.com\/gigapans\/141769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ripoll<\/a>) persuaded me to use gold texture.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_142059975852\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142059975852\" class=\"size-large wp-image-142059975852 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blog.sketchfab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/image01-2-1030x588.jpg\" alt=\"The basic pigments used in the painting of our medieval area of southern Europe. Giribet]<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the software, I did different tests and research on the possibilities of &#8216;painting&#8217; on a complex 3D model obtained by photogrammetry. I tried several applications like Cinema 4D \/ BodyPaint, Z-Brush, Substance Painter, 3D-Coat and some others. All have advantages and disadvantages, but BodyPaint and 3D-Coat allowed me to better &#8216;paint&#8217; directly on a 3D model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process was quite slow as I had to create a layer for each color and shape, so I could then paint and modify colors at will, visualizing different scenarios.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I finally published the model in Sketchfab as a colored frieze piece which allows easy exploration of the shape and texture of a complex model like this one, impossible to exhibit properly as a series of flat images.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"sketchfab-embed-wrapper\">    <iframe title=\"Romanesque polychrome simulation (low poly)\" class=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/models\/74f6132102d84f59b2373e54582dea29\/embed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; xr-spatial-tracking\" allowfullscreen=\"\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" xr-spatial-tracking=\"true\" execution-while-out-of-viewport=\"true\" execution-while-not-rendered=\"true\" web-share=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>It would be interesting in the future to have an interactive control system allowing Sketchfab to show and hide textured layers of the same model, for example allowing users to view and compare the original texture of stone layers, and then adding layers of paint (many doorways and sculptures have been repainted over the centuries according to the aesthetics of the time), helping establish the working hypotheses.<\/p>\n<h3><b>The Video<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To summarise the work process and the results I created this video where the different stages of the process are demonstrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Romanesque polychromy simulation\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/196709074?dnt=1?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><b>Future Projects<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this work we have seen recreating the sculptural or architectural models and virtually hypothesizing on how the polychromy originally looked is not only possible but relatively easy to perform. Moreover, thanks to platforms like Sketchfab, these can also easily be shared. I\u2019d love to participate in a project where experts like archaeologists or historians and others, would scientifically study a set of sculptural remains.
