Artec 3D Leverages Sketchfab’s 3D Viewer to Showcase High Poly 3D Models on its Website

About Artec 3D

Founded in 2007, Artec 3D is a developer and manufacturer of professional 3D scanning hardware and software

Its first range of scanners was introduced in 2008 and since then it has released new next-generation 3D scanners every one to two years and new scanning software every 12 months.

Artec 3D’s products and services are used across various industries by top companies in the fields of automotive, aircraft and aerospace manufacturing, IT, consumer goods, and electronics. Its client list includes such companies as Intel, Microsoft, NASA, Apple, General Electric, Mercedes, Tesla, Siemens, Nike, and Adidas.

Needs:

Artec 3D needed an easy-to-use and user-friendly 3D viewer to showcase the 3D models created by its clients using Artec’s scanners.

Solution: the Sketchfab 3D viewer

  • Artec 3D uses the Sketchfab 3D viewer to display 3D models, which have been made with its scanners, on its website
  • The company also uses the Sketchfab viewer for sharing 3D models privately within the team or with its partners and clients.

Results

→ Experience 3D models online and without any plugin:

Sketchfab’s 3D viewer doesn’t require any plugins, so Artec 3D’s visitors can interact with multiple 3D models on its website without having to download a plugin, install an application, or go to a different website.

“Sketchfab is completely in the browser. This removes a point of friction when sharing with others who may not have proper 3D viewer software installed, thus helping us to communicate faster and more effectively both inside and outside the company.

—Brian Zhang, Applications Engineer, Artec 3D

Easily embed 3D models on Artec 3D’s website:

Artec 3D can easily embed a Sketchfab-hosted model on its website by copying and pasting the embed code into the site’s HTML.

“It’s so easy to share high-detail models on almost any device. I really like how consistent and reliable the service is.

—Brian Zhang, Applications Engineer, Artec 3D

Privately share models with clients:

Thanks to Sketchfab’s properties options, Artec 3D can set models as Private and Password-protected, thereby preventing the models from appearing publicly on Sketchfab and allowing Artec 3D to securely share 3D models internally or with clients.

Edit the final rendering of a model

Artec 3D can polish the final rendering of its 3D scenes using Sketchfab’s 3D Editor: edit materials and texture for a model, add light sources and set the intensity of light, edit post-processing effects, and add annotations.

“The final model looks as realistic and as close to the original as possible.

Upload high-poly 3D models & showcase them in great detail

Sketchfab enables Artec 3D to upload high-poly models, which are essential to display the exceptional level of detail captured by the Artec scanners.

“The key parameters for our 3D gallery are the balance between the number of polygons, the highest possible accuracy of geometry, and the uploading speed in the viewing mode. And we’re very glad that Sketchfab’s limit for the number of polygons is quite high.

—Maxim Deripasko, Senior 3D artist, Artec 3D

Create Virtual Reality experiences at tradeshows

Models shared using Sketchfab’s 3D viewer are viewable in VR directly from Artec’s website. Artec has leveraged Sketchfab’s Virtual Reality feature at tradeshows and exhibitions to boost engagement and bring traffic to its booth.

“With Sketchfab, I have peace of mind knowing that the model I upload on my computer will be shown correctly on mobile devices and VR headsets as well.

—Brian Zhang, Applications Engineer, Artec 3D
