Crop-Mark surveys using a drone

Archaeological research by the Landscape Research Centre in and around West Heslerton in Yorkshire has been in progress for 40 years. This has included intensive programmes of air photography, multi-spectral imaging and vast geophysical surveys. New drone technologies offer the opportunity to examine crop-marks at 1-2 centimetre resolution greatly enhancing our understanding of sites many not seen for many years. The drone surveys are adding detail not previously recorded to a range of 'sites' observed using different technologies for 4 decades. The very long and wet winter of 2017/2018 combined with a long hot dry spell from May to July 2018 provided the environment within which extraordinary crop-marks have become visible, some of the results can be seen here.
