Classic Maya codex-style vessels are defined by their distinctive decoration: calligraphic black lines on a cream base, with red bands demarcating the upper and lower limits of the imagery. These vessels are associated with the royal court of the Classic Maya city of Calakmul, but they were produced in a larger region spanning what is now southern Campeche, Mexico and northern Peten, Guatemala. Their imagery is most always mythological in nature, depicting primordial events, divine personages, and supernatural motifs. Made during a relatively brief period of time (ca. 650-750 CE), the vessels likely reflect the work of only a handful of artists and their workshops. This collection makes digitally accessible some of LACMA's codex-style vessels.
