Frieze Sculpture 2018
Ford is best known for her portrayals of children and animals, or at least different kinds of creatures with distinct anthropomorphic qualities with which she explores aspects of the human condition. Ford often regards her work as being sculptures dressed as people who are dressed as animals. There are no animals here, but a group of figures which refer to Marie Antoinette.
Under life-size the works are doll-like with blank inexpressive and almost featureless faces. This fabric work has now been cast in black bronze, allowing the work to be shown outdoors. This will be the first time the bronze group has been shown in the UK. Ford’s fairy-tale like work amuses, enchants and disturbs viewers simultaneously. Installed in Regent’s Park the figures appear to swirl around in a kind of ‘danse macabre’ under the trees of the park.
