The story is that the prince was turned into this beast by an evil witch and was forced to fight other beasts that were once other people. The witch also forced him to kill humans as well. after killing the other beasts, they turn back into their human forms. One of the creatures he was forced to fight and kill was once the woman he loved. This scene is right after he finds out he just killed his love.
