More model informationThe rock formation adorned with carvings and petroglyphs is situated about 150 meters north-west from the citadel of Metsamor. The carvings were first noticed in 1902 by Mesrovb Ter-Movsessyan. The rocky outcrop, called Pokr Blur by Armenians, was interpreted as an observatory and ritual centre dated to the 3rd millennium BC by Elma Parsamian. Among the carvings there are many man-made depressions, niches, possibly of ritual function, and a staircase.
