Ichthyosaurus conybeari Lydekker, 1888
Ichthyosaurus conybeari Lydekker, 1888 (juvenile)
From the Jurassic, Sinemurian Stage, Blue Lias Formation, angulata Biozone Found at Watchet, Somerset in the 1980s.
It has recently been figured and described by Massare and Lomax, 2016 in the Journal of Vertebrate Palaeontology (DOI: 10.1080/02724634.2016.1163264) It is now known to be one of only four known specimens of this species, and the only one from Somerset.
It is beautifully preserved, and almost complete apart from the front part of the skull which has been restored. The recent re-examination and re-naming of this fossil has added a great deal to our understanding of these early ichthyosaurs.
The fossil is on display in our Evolution of Wales gallery.
