This ancient artifact is a Kissi Pomdo Nomoli Mende Carved Stone. An Ancestor Figure from the African Arts that came from the mysterious Nobodi or Pomdo people from Sierra Leone. According to some experts this type of ancient artifact can be dated back to 17 000 years B.C. to 35 000 years B.C. But little is known about it. I bought it from at an auction in Stockholm and it might be a remake of the same style from ca.16th century. Even so is still a very fascinating piece of ancient history that I want to share with you. Small stone figures found in Mende fields and used today as protectors and oracles are among the earliest art objects from Sierra Leone. The figures are attributed to the Sapi and Bullom cultures because they bear a striking stylistic resemblance to the well known “Afro-Portuguese” ivories, dated to the mid-16th century.
