More model informationThe calcining oven at Allensford, Northumberland (near Castleside) post initial cleaning and prior to consolidation works. October 2017.
An iron forge for the production of iron at Allensford was in place by at least 1683. Archaeomagnetic dating of the furnace provided a date for its final campaign of 1740 +/- 10 years. The furnace was one of only two in the North East producing iron during the 17th century and the calcining kiln is the earliest surviving example of the type nationally.
A model of the nearby furnace before the scheme of works began, showing it capped with concrete placed in the late 20th century, can be seen at https://skfb.ly/6QwSX
