Posse Grande Rock Art

Posse Grande archaeological site is located at the boundary region between Municipalities of Arcos and Pains, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The prehistoric paintings in this rock shelter contains representations of animals, follow in number by abstract and human figures. Reds and yellows, followed by whites, are the predominant used colors.

By its themes this rock paintings can be linked to the Planalto Tradition. However, the high contrast between outline and inside figure colors, resulting in elaborate patterns, is typical of the São Francisco Tradition.

One can interpret these kind of rock paintings as ritualistic representations of day-by-day events of hunter-gatherer societies, which had occupied the region between 9.000 and 7.000 years ago.
