More model informationFunerary altar-shaped stele of a young actor in military costume. 175-200 A.D. The piece is in the splendid Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. A remarkable amount of the original paint survives on this stone sculpture which was excavated near the eastern fortification wall of the city. The museum label suggests that the tragedy mask behind Marcus’ right shoulder might be there to show that he also portrayed female roles; but as his mother was an actress, possibly it could also be a symbol of her grief at his early death? Photographed with hand-held Panasonic GH5 camera and 25mm (50mm equivalent) f1.7 Panasonic lens.
