Tubbrid - Sheela-na-Gig - CO074-1693D ModelNoAI
Discovered at Tracton Abbey in Co. Cork this Sheela is now in the care of Cork Public Museum -see SMR CO099-088 find location. The carving is set on an L shaped black, with chamfered edges. It possibly came from a window or doorway. The sheela has a large triangular head, the eyes are circular hollows with a thick rectangular nose. The mouth is open in a rectangular shape. The chin is pointed and the neck narrows from the top resulting in a raised clavicle. The arms are extended out and down by the body with the hands by the side. The body is narrow. the breasts are high up and to the sides of the chest. It is unclear is the hole in the body is the navel or vulva. One suggestion is the right leg is bent at the knee and left straight with a large vulva. Another is the figure has a triangular waist with a cloth to the right. The legs are narrow and broken below the knee. The vulva is a small depression. A this is the figure was once mail and a mason reassigned the gender at some point.
