More model informationAnvil Stone from Sakdrisi, Georgia.
The object is an anvil stone from the Bronze Age Gold Mine Sakdrisi in Georgia (the oldest gold mine in the world, dating to about 5000 years BP!), dating to the so-called Kura-Araxes period and weighing more than 25 kg.
It was used during the process of ore benefication. In order to be able to mill and wash the previously mined ore, it was necessary to crush the ore to smaller pieces that could then be milled.
The anvil stone was excessively used on both sides and further hammer marks are even visible on the edge.
Objects such as this allow archaeologists to get a better understanding of the operation chain of ore benefication, which is an important step to gain gold from the mined ore.
