Orthostat C8 is a decorated stone dating from the Neolithic, located in Cairn T (ME015-012004-). at Loughcrew, Brú na Bóinne, Co. Meath, Ireland. The decorated orthostat is located in the end recess of the tomb. The tomb’s passage is aligned on the equinox - at these times of year the rising sun shines along the passage and illuminates this orthostat. It is therefore referred to as the backstone or “Equinox Stone”. The orthostat is decorated with several motifs including radial symbols, shield like motifs, concentric arcs and chevrons. These were “pecked” into the stone using a stone tool, possibly made of flint or quartz.
The original object was recorded using the Artec EVA structured light hand scanner and processed using Artec Studio, Geomagic, and 3DS Max.
