Dagger Chape (specimen #094-44). The Berry Site (31BK22). Burke County, North Carolina. Excavated in 2016 by Warren Wilson College Field School. Unit: N813E203, level: Plowzone 1. Weight: 15.5 g. Material: Iron.
Remarks: This iron artifact is a chape (scabbard tip) from a leather scabbard for a dagger or a sword. The scabbard most likely belonged to a member of Captain Juan Pardo’s 1567 expedition from the Spanish capital of Santa Elena to the interior of the US with the intention of establishing a route to the silver mines in Mexico. The artifact was found in the northeast corner of the fort (Fort San Juan) built by the Pardo expedition next to the Native American town of Joara.
