Funerary Stele of Ampharete with her grandchild
Grave relief of Ampharete with her grandchild 430-420 BC. Kerameikos Archaeological Museum, Athens. The name of the dead woman is carved on the horizontal cornice. On the epistyle is the epigram: ΤΕΚΝΟΝ ΕΜΗΣ ΘΥΓΑΤΡΟΣ ΤΟΔ’ΕΧΩ ΦΙΛΟΝ, ΟΜΠΕΡ ΟΤ’ΑΥΓΑΣ ΟΜΜΑΣΙΝ ΗΕΛΙΟ ΖΩΝΤΕΣ ΕΔΕΡΚΟΜΕΘΑ, ΕΧΟΝ ΕΜΟΙΣ ΓΟΝΑΣΙΝ ΚΑΙ ΝΥΝ ΦΘΙΜΕΝΟΝ ΦΘΙΜΕΝΗ ΧΩ“I hold here the beloved child of my daughter, which I held on my knees when we were alive and saw the light of the sun, and now, dead, I hold it dead”.
