More model informationThe circular chapel in Petronell-Carnuntum is one of the oldest and most valuable round buildings and is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Austria. It is also called Johannes-chapel and was built in the first half of the 12th century. The chapel served as a baptistery for a long time. Until the 18th century the crypt was created, which today serves as the burial place of the noble family Abensberg-Traun. The chapel consists of a higher circular building with a conical roof built around 1700 and a lower apse and was built in Romanesque stone cube. The outer facade is divided by half-column pilasters with capitals. Above the entrance is a tympanum.
