XT-craft, submarine at Gullane Sands, Aberlady Bay, East Lothian, Scotland, UK.
XT-craft – British four-man midget submarines from WW II. Only six examples of this specific group of X craft were built and these were used for training purposes. This model shows one of the two XT craft in Aberlady Bay, they were towed here in 1946 to be used for target practise by aircraft firing 20mm canon shells, since then they have just been left.
X-craft (slightly different design to the XT training versions) were used in 1943 to lay charges under the German battleship Tirpitz in Operation Source, which put the ship out of action for six months. X-craft were also used for beach reconnaissance prior to the D-Day landings.
The wrecks of two midget submarines along with a few other wooden wrecks can be seen at low tide in Aberlady Bay.
