Malahide Demesne Sheela-na-Gig(1) DU012-0310023D ModelNoAI
This sheela is on private land at Malahide Castle. Access is by request from the County Architect. Part of a pair. Set into the NE of the chancel of a medieval church this sandstone carving has begun to erode. Set inside a border the sheela has an oval head with two eyes. These are worn but can be seen as oval insets on either side of a triangular nose. A faint mouth can be seen. The head is attached to the neck which blends into the body. There are no breasts and it is unclear if the arms are rendered. The border to the left of the body appears as if it could form an arm, with the hand resting on the left thigh. The right hand may be raised up to the side of the head. A small hand like feature can be seen here. The legs are quite short, and cut off, during the secondary placement of the carving. The Vulva is a deep vertical lozenge shaped cut.
