Pentellic Marble , Palazzo Massimo, Rome, Italy.
This relief depicts Antinous, the Bythinian youth beloved of the Emperor Hadrian. Antinous drowned in the Nile River, amidst mysterious circumstances, after which Hadrian had his young lover deified.
In the relief, Antinous is portrayed as Silvanus, the god of the woods, crowned by a pine branch, carrying a sickle, and accompanied by a hound. Antinous stands beside an altar, upon which an inscription in Greek denotes the artist: Antonianos of Aphrodisia.
