Fugla Ness Broch near Toft, Delting, Shetland Isles, Scotland, UK.
A ruined broch, surviving as a mound of rubble and some stretches of earthwork defensive banks.
In simplistic terms a broch is a stone tower built in the Iron Age, most brochs were occupied 2000 years ago. The best surviving example is 13 metres tall, most brochs were probably never this tall.
The broch lies on gently sloping land just above the sea overlooking Yell Sound. Two guard cells flank a rubble choked entrance passage on the eastern (seaward) side of the broch. Some of the outer wall face on the eastern side of the broch has been lost to erosion by the sea revealing the foundation of the broch. When the site was surveyed in the early 1930s the plans indicate the broch was a complete circle, this is no longer the case today.
