Sitting on an outcrop of rock just beyond the Beachley peninsula lies a tidal island that is home to the remains of what was once a chapel. Old wives tales connect the chapel with a 5th Century anchoress who abandoned her father to take up the life of a religious hermit. The remains tell a slightly different story however and date the construction of the Chapel to around the early 13th Century. The story of its construction is still a mystery, records suggest that it is not linked to the Church but was built by one of the Marcher Lords, powerful men who upheld the rule of law on the controversial Welsh/England border. Whilst we may not know who built it, the connection with the established crossing point of the River Severn cannot be ignored and it is considered likely that you may have prayed for your safe passage across this treacherous route. You can find more about the Chapel and crossing the Severn in our blog.
