The naval lieutenant of the Spanish Navy and naval archaeologist Carlos Etayo Elizondo, reached the international recognition by its crossings in identical boats to which used Christopher Columbus in its trips to the New World.
Throughout his life he sailed more than 20,000 nautical miles on board reproductions of historic caravels, overcoming the same dangers and difficulties as the old Spanish sailors.
His last great voyage was made in 1992, at the age of 71, aboard “La Niña III”. Etayo left with eleven crew from Palos to America to commemorate the first trip of Columbus, crossing that realized at the same time that the admiral.
