Drumcliffe High Cross, County Sligo, Ireland.
In the 6th CenturyAD St Columba (Com Cille) founded a monastery here at Drumcliffe. The only visible remains of the monastery are the base of a round tower, this High Cross and fragments of other high crosses.
This decorated High Cross is carved in relief from sandstone, it currently stands to 3.83 metres high although it would have once been a little taller as there is a socket in the top of the cross for a finial.*
The carving depicts a variety of biblical scenes including the Crucifixion, Presentation at the Temple, Daniel in the lions den, Adam & Eve, Cain & Abel, Virgin & Child (unique on an Irish High cross). Other areas are carved with beading and Celtic Knot patterns.
-*I’ve been unable to find any descriptions that mention the socket in the top - but it can clearly be seen in the model.
