This fragment of a Roman sarcophagus shows the Titan Prometheus modelling a statue of a nude ephebe in clay on a pedestal. Athena touches its head with a butterfly, a symbol of the soul, to bring the work to life, and it turns its head to look at her. Behind the goddess flies a young woman with butterfly´s wings, who is to be interpreted as Psyche, the soul, in human shape. The action occurs in a natural setting, represented by a naked river nymph and a dressed tree nymph.
