Growing up in Gloucester - Roman
This person was found in the mass grave and most likely died from the Antonine plague. Unfortunately due to the remains becoming mingled in the grave only the mandible is present and it is therefore not possible to say whether they were male or female.
This is a rare example of a cyst that has grown to such a large size! A cyst is a sac that may be filled with air, fluid or other material. A cyst can form in any part of the body, including bones, organs and soft tissues. The border and size of the void on this jaw is suggestive of a residual cyst. This is a type of cyst that forms around the roots of teeth in the lower or upper jaw. These cysts can form either spontaneously or as the result of tooth cavities. This one was located in the lower jaw and would have led to tooth loss but as the teeth were lost long before death we do not know the cause of the cyst. The person would have been aware of the cyst and it might have caused them discomfort however there is little evidence infection to the bone.
