18th century watchhouse built into the boundary wall surrounding the Auld Aisle Cemetery, Kirkintilloch. The watchhouse and boundary wall may have been constructed from stone taken from the earlier medieval church of St Ninian’s which was once located within or close to the cemetery. The original function of the watchhouse was to provide a place where a guard could observe the cemetery and prevent grave robbers ‘or resurrectionists’ who would attempt to steal recently buried bodies and sell them on to anatomists in university towns such as Glasgow.
