From Freugh, Stranraer, Scotland a small ovoid stone decorated with an oval frame, inscribed cross and a central, deep cut circular depression. Pebbles with various cross forms are found across Ireland and in smaller numbers in Scotland. Names given in modern times include altar, prayer, cursing ,priest’s, pilgrim’s and turning stones. The cross gives a religious feel but portable pestles, grinding stones and hammerstones date from the introduction of stone ground technology in the Neolithic. More.
