The Church of the Gesù, in Rome, Italy. Considered to be the “first truly baroque” piece of architecture, the Church of the Gesù served as an architectural model for following Jesuit churches throughout Italy and the Americas.

Designed by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, construction began in 1568 and was completed in 1580. The architect Giacoma della Porta revised the facade and was involved in the construction of the cross-vault, dome, and apse.

The ceiling fresco, “Triumph of the Name of Jesus”, as well as the cupola, central vault, transepts, and window recesses, are by Giovanni Battista Gaulli.

The St. Ignatius Chapel was designed by Andrea Pozzo between 1696 and 1700, and houses the tomb of St. Ignatius.

The church is located in the Piazza del Gesù in Rome, Italy.
